devorah major: Ten-Minute Live Reading

We are celebrating the great literary org A Gathering of the Tribes and their latest Black Lives Matter Issue by having them guest curate our 10-min features for the month of February.

We are thrilled to welcome devorah major as the February 15 feature.

Born and raised in California, granddaughter of documented and undocumented immigrants, devorah major served as San Francisco’s Third Poet Laureate (2002-2006). She has seven books of poetry, two novels and several poems, essays and short stories published. She has performed her work frequently with musicians, some of whom are Mark Izu, Destiny Muhammad, Marcus Shelby, Babatunde Lea, Anthony Brown, and Richard Howell. In June 2015 major premiered her poetry play Classic Black: Voices of 19th Century African-Americans in San Francisco, with music composed and performed by Destiny Muhammad. at the San Francisco International Arts Festival. devorah major also presents her work nationally and internationally with and without musicians. She has been a participant in international poetry festivals in Italy, Belgium, Bosnia, Jamaica, and Venezuela, and performed her poetry in France, the Bahamas and Germany.  In 2022 she received Italy’s Regina Coppola International Literary Award performing in Sardinia and Northern and Southern Italy
